Hi my Name is

ZAK

I've Been Here Since: 2011-10-01
DOB: October 1, 2007
Gender: Male
Size: 45 lbs. approx.

My Behavior:

It was during one of the country's worst natural disasters, that we got the plea for help.  No one can forget what happened in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.  A tornado so big that it took out the entire city and surrounding areas.  Tuskegee didn't escape damage either.  With animal shelters overflowing with displaced and injured pets, resuce workers were overwhelmed beyond belief.  So what could be worse than being right in the middle of this twister?

There lay a little brownish red Pit Bull, tethered to a rope in a muddy backyard.  His back leg so severely injured and filled with infection from the gaping wound, that he was barely alive.  But his injuries weren't from this massive tornado.  He was the victim of a cruel and uncaring owner.  Apparently "Big Red" had been hit by a car.  The owner didn't want to spend the money to take him to the vet so he simply tied him back up in his backyard.  Words cannot express what we think of someone like this.  Actually yes words can express…but….kids read our website so we won't list them here.

Thankfully rescuers got the little guy and brought him to safety and he went thru major surgery.  His back leg ended up having to be amputated but that doesn't slow him down.  Zak is by far one of the most grateful and happiest dogs I've ever met.  And oh my gawd…can he run!!  Though he is animal aggressive he is sooooooo people friendly and we just adore this dog.  And we have the Macon County Humane Society in Tuskegee, Alabama, for saving this gem and bringing him to us.  What a treasure he is and anyone who adopts him will be the luckiest family in the world.  Trust me if I didn't have my own "jerk" dogs, I would scoop him up in a heartbeat!

Help Support one of our Dogs

We have so many dogs that could use a little help to not only get them through each day but also help the non-profit keep our doors open. You can either pick one of our PIT PALS or pick a dog from our DOGS FOR ADOPTION. Remember, by doing this, you can come out and visit your sponsored Pit Bull in person and spend the day together. Be that special person in their life and show them that someone cares more about them, than the former owner who dumped them here. Help us, to help them. I did not realize that Zak was an Alabama baby. All the times I look at the babies on this site I learn something new each time I visit and that is often.

I think people dont comment because there are no words to say that can’t be expressed through the human language. Only the language of love can express the words i want to say to comfort this brave dog. I LOVE YOU ZAK!

He is beautiful. I’ve always wanted a 3 legged pit.

  7. Heather Berry on December 12th, 2011 3:46 pm

I absolutely adore Zak. That face just says it all. Obviously his owners were stuck on stupid, but Zak would be the perfect companion to anyone in their right mind. Three legs are way better than four.

Awwwwe….. i feel sooo bad for him! My brother just broke his leg in a bad dirt bike accident so he knows how he feels, except he still has his leg. I really hope he gets a wonderful home! I really love Pit Bulls, but my mother dosn’t like big dogs. So when i move out, I’ll either get a Pit Bull or German Shepard. I’m tired of small dogs, we have a miniature dachshund!

He looks marvelous, so worth the time and trouble to save him from the horrid spot he was in… the awful wound and sliding him onto a piece of board, to carry him to the vet school, is an experience I will never forget. He improved so much with decent care, and proper nutrition. He was a joy to Foster here at the farm, so perky and expressive. I always thought he should find a fellow amputee or a veteran to share his life with, because he never gets down about his condition, just powers on and loves every minute of life. Live like a dog, they have the right attitude :-) On behalf of Macon Co Humane Soc, thanks to you for accepting him into your program. Good luck to you all, especially the recovering wounded.

  18. Alyse Edmonds on December 29th, 2011 4:55 pm

I love animals, dogs especially. Pitties are AMAZING dogs, loving and loyal. It is the horrible environment and abusive owners that give these beautiful animals a bad rap. I am very pro-punish the deed not the breed. I live in Kentucky with my family, but when I move out and get a place of my own, I want to rescue a pit bull. I believe they are very misunderstood. Breaks my heart to know that there are people out there, who use this breed to do their dirty work. I am glad that Louisville, KY declared that banning pitties is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. I think that what you guys are doing is wonderful. There is a lot of hate in this world, people fear what is different or judge based off of appearance. It is nice to know that there are good people like you out there trying to help. It’s people like you, that give me hope. :) Thank you.

That is a beautiful dog and if i didnt already have four dogs and a duck i would live to adopt him. I have a seven week old beagle and she lost the same leg and shes still as happy as ever. she is so sweet i also have a white english hes a hand full and the my baby who is two is a boykin spaniel and Weimaraner mix. i would love to add this beautiful boy to our family.

  34. Lisa on March 21st, 2012 11:14 am

What a survivor this big, beautiful boy is! Thank goodness he found his way to you all. I owned a three legged Boxer (cancer took a frontleg), and the loss of that leg slowed him down for a nanosecond! My beautiful Boxer boy lived another 6 years after his amputation, and he even survived a second round of cancer! Our Vet told us more than once that our boy was the most inspiring dog he had ever met, because he never had a bad day with all he had been through. I currently have another Boxer boy, but if I didn’t I would be pounding at your front door until you let me adopt Zac. Somebody, please go get this dog…you won’t regret it….he is a GEM!

  35. Jess on April 3rd, 2012 2:13 pm

We had the pleasure of meeting Zak at the NOLA grand opening! He is a shining example of just how tough it is to break a pitt bull’s spirit! This little guy never missed a beat, tail wagging the whole time soaking up all the lovin’ he could get! I really don’t think he knows he’s missing a leg! We didn’t even realize it at first, because he gets around so well. Our 6 year old had to point it out to us…lol!

  36. dana hernandez on April 28th, 2012 12:49 am

He is perfect!!!! I love this guy so much!!! I just wanna hug him!!!!!

  37. Tracy on May 17th, 2012 12:30 pm

This is one beautiful animal! If he was not animal aggressive I would definitely want to bring him home. I am a huge pitbull fan. I own 2 and my oldest one got his front leg amputated when he was 4born months old. It was pricey but well worth the money to have my happy puppy!

  38. trevel beckford on July 8th, 2012 11:05 pm

I would have love to adopt one of the dogs to show ppl how to take care of dog but because I live in jamaica it a lil hard for me to adopt one of the dogs.

  39. Tammy Williams on July 10th, 2012 9:05 am

Oh Ebony, I wish I had brought you home when I had the chance. I’m sure you won’t be there long. You’ll be an awesome service dog I’m sure.

  41. Savannah McAlpine on November 24th, 2012 11:13 pm

What you are doing with these dogs is unbelievable. You are truly a saint. I, as an animal lover, appreciate what you and your family do for these marvelous, so misunderstood animals. There should be more people like you. Wish there was. THANK YOU!

It is soooo horrible to see how bad animals get treated for no reason. I would absolutley love to adopt one but unforunatly i have another dog who’s a beagle/pitbull mix and my parents said no more dogs. I realyl wish there was some way to show people that pitbulls aren’t really as mean and as terrible as everyone says they are…..my dog is the most gentle dog i’ve ever had.I have always loved dogs and I wish there was something more i could dooo:(

  46. Terri Fowler on December 3rd, 2012 1:16 pm

I totally “get” those words describing someone who could treat any animal like that!! I won’t say either, since I’m sure my comment would have to be deleted!! This guy is adorable.
I am out of state and have two dogs but I love reading their stories and looking at their pics. I’ve sponsored Mr. Wilson and hopefully I’ll get that raise and be able to sponsor another one of your pups!

Got something to say?
