Tuscaloosa K9 Camp dog rescue Our Doppleganger
This American flag was all that stood at the former site of the Tuscaloosa K9 Camp dog rescue and training center. It stood for the 20 plus dogs that lost their lives on April 27, 2011. Their owner and caretaker, Heather "Red" Litz, along with two other devoted employees, bunkered down to try and save as many as possible and as most faithful dog owners would've done…almost lost their own lives in the process.
They shared their story, their pain and tears, with us on our TV show and it will premiere this Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012. Never have we felt so drawn to a cause. Before we arrived, we had been told that "Red" was Tia's "doppleganger." Something that Tia shook her head at…until she met Red. Not only a physical resemblance (years apart of course), but spiritual and emotional to a tee. But what was most apparent was the unconditional sacrifices they both have made for their dogs and the willingness to die for them in order to protect them…something words cannot describe.
The Tuscaloosa K9 Camp still has not recovered from the loss of their ENTIRE facility. Rebuilding has been slow. They still need help with donations of money, supplies and mostly MANPOWER. Red is now on her own (everyone left after the tornado). The Tuscaloosa K9 Camp is hosting a volunteer event this weekend in hopes of getting alot of work done but to also round up permanent volunteers. After watching their story on TV…well, just get out your box of Kleenex…

Got something to say?

Oh my god, I’m crying already and I haven’t even seen the episode. So wish I didn’t need a job, so I had money to pay bills. ‘Cause I would be there in a minute. Ughhh. Best wishes to you all. Hang in there. Lots of love, licks, tail wags and hugs! – Eric and Carol -
My thoughts and prayers go out to The Tuscaloosa K9 Camp and Red.
I am so so so sorry it came to this for Red and the beloved ones that passed….there are not enough words that can experss my heart felt love for all of you…if I could I would be there as well….

I am in such a somber state after seeing these pictures. I live in Mississippi and have lived through many many horriable stormes but have somehow never been touched by any of them. I have seen the destruction but never had to rebuild. Its amazing you have such a spirit to be called to this rescue. Prayers for blessings to all of you!!

I’m sure they need everything and need it now but I have a couple of questions. What type of food do they like to use? Would they take gently used gear? I ask because I’ve bought a few collars and leashes over the years that for one reason or another I only used a few times and I’m sure there are other people that have done it too. Also, what about mail delivery? Are they too far out for us to order food and have it delivered to them?
OMG!!!! i wish there was something i could do to help but im in Cali and have no way to get there if i had the finances i would donate….. =,( those poor dogs…… Red you are a true inspiration i dont know anyone who has ever risked their own life to save the dogs…..
I hope the broadcast of the program will help bring in donations & God Bless those who so bravely tried to save those dogs. I used to work with exotic animals in Indiana & watched as a tornado came within a few miles of the facility I worked for & it scared me to the bone. If I did not live in Alaska I’d head over & help. So please those of you that can do so. – T
My heart just breaks. I’m in Michigan and wish I could twitch my nose and make it all better. Life isn’t fair. Red love your tribute to the brave lost souls. God will bless you in a special way, and you know the dogs care. :]
I feel so bad for her and her animals. I am here in Texas and can’t get there to help because I am pregnant and have two children under the age of 4 who I do not have a baby sitter for. Hopefully when we get our income taxes we can come down and get yall some donations and other things that yall need. lov ya and God bless you. You will always be in our prayers.
i cant even speak right this moment, but as soon as i get my soc sec check i will sent money.if i was able i would volunteer i would be honored to do so.god bless all!!!!
It is such a tragedy when people so dedicated loose so much. God is with you guys as you rebuild and make new and wonderful memories. Those that were lost will never be forgotten but will always remain in your hearts as a reminder of why you do what you do. god bless you all!
God bless you all, my heart go out to all of you for the loss you have sufferd and the hard work ahead of you ! god bless you all !
I wish I would have known sooner. I live in East Texas, but it’s only a 8 hr drive. I would not be able to get there in time now to do much good.

I work along side TK9 and took a trailer of donations down from St. Louis MO a few weeks post tornado. They prefer to feed Iams, but anything is helpful. Gear anywhere from gently used to abused (as long as it is in good safe! working order) is always a help. To my knowledge they are not to far out to have items delivered. After we got back to St. Louis I shipped out via USPS and everything I sent made it. The address above is correct and is the address for shipping. Fayellen (and anyone else wondering the same things) I hope this helped. Please let me know if you have any more questions. I will continue to try to answer questions as often as possible. Thank you!!!!
**Disclaimer** I am not on campus. I am volunteer foster/rescue/donation gathering help from St. Louis, but stay in close contact with Red regarding what they want and need at camp.
I’m almost in tears right now but I’m waiting to see the show to let the rest out. This is such a sad story and I wish I had the money to get down there to help out with whatever needs helping with. Our prayers go out to the families that lost loved ones and the dogs that were living there. So sorry for your loss and I wanted to thank the volunteers and families that are already helping out.
we were lucky. in Limestone County AL whole tralier parks and subdivions were gone two went right over our house. our bulldogs were unharmed luckly. we all have just bout cleaned up our community.
This episode is making me cry so hard. Red and her family are so strong to do what they are doing after losing everything.. my heart is breaking for them and the dogs they lost!!! I would be so empty if I lost my pit, she is my other baby… All that Red and Tia do with their family’s is just amazing and humbling….. God Bless you all with everything you do!!!
I hope you get your kenill up and runing.
Hopes in Matty
Ps I’m 11 yers old
I just watched the program and I am still crying. I started volunteering at our local shelter when I was 14. I am shocked at the total devastation that happened. Although I have not worked in 2 years I am going to get money to them somehow. I also am putting out the word to my Facebook friends and urge everyone else to do so as well.
With just a little money from a lot of us will make a large dent in the recovery, so let’s get the word out and repost the address, because Dogs are a man’s BEST friend!
God bless you all!!!! I live in north Alabama In Marshall co., and understand the fear of these tornadoes. Bless you bless you, for the devotion you have for those dogs. You have a purpose and God see’s your pain, and your purpose. Keeping you in prayer!! I don’t blame you for leaving during the bad weather. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats, and I cant imagine loosing them. I am sorry for your loss! God Bless You!!!!

where i can make a donation to help ?
I know I already posted but just wanted to show what I put on my Facebook page: Ok, I just watched Pit Bulls and Parolee’s and I got something to say! For anyone who loves animals pay attention. They just aired a show they did in Tuscaloosa, Alabama of the Tuscaloosa K9 Camp Dog Rescue. This camp lost everything, houses, kennels, fencing and 21 dogs out of the 52 that were there from a Tornado. They almost lost their lives by trying to save the dogs. One young boy volunteer, dragged his girlfriend and tied her to a tree with 5 dog leashes to save her (which he did, but he suffered a broken pelvis). This is dedication, this is devotion, this was courageous! They need our help to re-build. If my 149 friends send just 5.00 that’s 745.00. That’s a lot of dog food. Or collars, leash’s, food bowls. If you forward this to your friends, and so on, and so on, think of what our networking could do for them. The address posted was: To Contact or Donate:

Ok, I can step off the soap box now, God I love dogs!
I just watched this episode of “Pit Bulls and Parolees”! Watched it twice!!! Cried through both episodes!!! I wish I could do more than just sit here and cry! I will pray you all!!! I used to have a pit myself! Her name was “Little Bit of Trouble”, or “Little Bit” for short! At one time I lived in a house; and the neighbors who lived in the duplex next door to me and my family went out of town, leaving their three pits alone for several days!!!!!! I finally noticed one of their dogs outside; the male would not let anyone get close to him, and the female and her puppy wouldn’t let me around them at first!!! I live in Central Texas, and it gets super hot here in the Summer!!!! I managed to finally get close enough to the female and fed and watered all 3 dogs daily, from our dog’s food and our own water!!!!! The owners of the dogs NEVER offered to repay us, and never thanked us!!!! A couple of days after they got back from San Antonio, which is where they were, I talked to one of the owners! She said that someone was supposed to be coming by and taking care of them. I told her that my husband and I had taken care of them for her!! A day or two later, my husband woke me up, and said that Little Bit was out of the yard, she had crawled under the fence. I got dressed, went outside to look for her, and heard a commotion from next door!!!! I went over to the neighbors’ house and found Bit lying next to their female…dead!! I screamed and fainted; when I came to the lady said her dog had NOT killed mine!!!! I said “Bulls&^%”, and went inside and called animal control!!! They picked up my dog; and later came back to pick up hers. She was gone, and my husband and I helped pick up her dogs!!! I don’t know what ever happened to her dogs, but I didn’t feel any better about having to do that!!!! In fact I cried about them, too!!! One day when own my own house and can have another dog, I’d love to have another pitty!!!!!
Dear Red, I just watched the episode of Pitbulls & Parolees about your kennel and I cried. Do you need permanent free help? I have SSD and just basically need a roof over my head and my dog and cat, My check will cover all other expenses I would need. In exchange I will help you every way I can including cleaning kennels to whatever else needs done. A tent is OK until kennel is rebuilt. Why- because you are doing what I’ve always wanted to do but can’t afford to do!
Oh my word… I can not express my deepest condolences on what has happened. I will be seeing what I can do to help donate items as I’m a bit far away to volunteer, though my heart is in it, my body is not capable at this time. I am praying for you all and that you can come back bigger, and stronger.
All my love to you and the dogs!
Sometimes people think on a small scale- Let us all come together as one. If all of us promise at least $2.00{[a cheap cup of coffee] and tell your friends, co-workers,family to commit $2.00 as well-we could make a big difference for Red in her time of need. Right now, this second ,you all know you can find $2.00.
all of you who have watched and are reading these posts: I am a friend of Reds, I went to training school with her and were roommates. I was fortunate enough to be able to get to her within 48hrs of this tradgedy but NOTHING could have prepared me for all of this. I made two trips from FT Campbell where I was stationed with my family to help and bring anything and everything I had from my house I did not need or could not take with me to Germany where I am now. For those of you who asked what kind of food and if she would use slightly used equipment the answers are: Iams is what she prefers to feed all the rescues, she always seems to be low and need iams puppy. Her personal dogs are fed Science Diet. Yes, she can and will certainly use any and all K9 related gear. also blankets, towels and cleaning supplies are always good and laundry stuff… I left her my washer and dryer so anything for cleaning and disinfecting laundry is welcome. Dont forget treats and toys, I tihnk Red likes the toys as much as the dogs!!! KONGs are a good choice in all sizes and a safe bet for the haeavy chewers… and my dogs personal favorite is the CHUCKIT…. great for engaging and wearing out those working breeds with lots of energy to expend!! Hope that gives you all some ideas… Its all I can do from Germany for my friend, try and get some information out there for her. I know she appreciates everything she gets. When the dogs are happy all is right in her world. thankyou everyone for you support of Red and words of encouragement- those are needed alot of days just as much everything else on the list. I love her and dont ever want her to feel like she is alone or is doing this for nothing and no one cares. thankyou again, for Red.
saw it..cired like a baby. If we had more people like ya’ll, our world would be a happier place.
I’m so sorry…
I sure wish I lived closer or could afford to travel there, I would love to help out. This is just heart wrenching, I cannot even imagine the pain of losing that many dogs, just horrendous.
My heart breaks I look at the pictures and cry I sent an email please check it out I am willing to come help for as long as it takes.
This episode made me want to cry! I feel so bad for Red, I wouldn’t know what I would do if I found my dog on death road after a disaster. Poor Red, she is one strong spirit, just like everyone at Villalobos. I feel like going there right now to help but I can’t. I will try my best too donate from Arizona! I would right now but I am in only middle school. I volunteer at a rescue in AZ, I couldn’t imagine what they must be going through, I love all the dogs there and too see not one but more than twenty pass away, just breaks my heart. I wish them the best!

“Red” If you ever need somebody to talk to … I’m in Texas so ya know the tears are big. Watching you on P&P now.
You are so beautiful and I love your tat. I’m going to see what I can do to help. Much love and respect.

I’m not tech savvy, but surely someone can set up a paypal account or some easy, instant way to donate for these folks? You garner so much more in donations that way.

I will do everything in my physical power to get down to Tuscaloosa and volunteer myself. It’s what my dad would have done, and I want so badly to help.
I am so sorry for your lost. I cried after the show was done.
It was so hard to hold back the tears until i seen what that rescue had gone threw, and then the tears just came a flowing. ive been watching your show well since it aired and i myself am a devoted pit bull owner for 7 years now. i rescued mine from a horse race track that i used to work at. Once i found out that mine had ended up with a good friend since his previous owner was a man that abused him, i had to have him even though he was tied up and aggressive at the time. 7 years later you cant even tell that my dog has a mean bone in his body and has been the best and most loyal dog ive ever owned. Im so thankful for people like you guys that give this amazing breed a second chance that no one else would! i truly admire you guys! if i lived closer i would love to volunteer, but i do know where i will be going to get my next pit bull
pits are god’s gift. hang in there and it will get better. It’s people like you who are the change we need to see in this world. Thank you.
This morning after logging on line I sent out a message to all of my FB friends about K9 camp asking everyone to post to their news feds and contribute whatever they could be it time or money, or both. I listed the address as well as both phone numbers that VRC had in their post and I will be re-posting it at least twice a day for the next several days and I am hoping someone closer to the source will post up-dates as often as they can.
Susan, I like your idea about donating just $2 from all of our friends, family and whatever, is there a dedicated donation site so I can post that with my up-dates? (VRC, do you know? Can they be sent to you with the money tagged for K9 Camp? Ideas please!)
May all y’all keep doin’ what you do so well! Blessing all around!
How does one send supplies/food/or anything to this K9 camp?
Thanks Gal
i am so sorry for us lose of her home and everything else and i am sorry she lost some great dogs and i have a 1 year old and i would be having a hard time like she is if i lost my dog.
I watched the show last night and cried from start to finish. I have been in 2 tornadoes and the last one 6/11 involved my friends at a humane society. The city it went through will never be the same. We all had to dive in to help and continue to get them back on their feet. God Bless Tia and putting these guys on the map so they can get the kind of help from animal people they need. May the 20 rest in peace. I feel for their loss.
I watched this episode Saturday night as i watch this show every Saturday . It was so heart wrenching. The part that got me the most was when the dogs all started howling after the service. I just totally lost it. I have soo much respect for Tia and Red and everyon out there doing rescue. I was a foster mom for years for Boston Terrier Rescue. God Bless all of you
Lov e the Bostons Benson and Bosley and Jayda the Portuguese Water Dog
Probably one of the most emotional episodes. I was crying by the. Red, you truly are a dog person and animal lover. If there was ANY way I could get down there to help, I would leave and go help right away in any way I could.
Tia, thanks for going out and helping Red. That was so sweet and touching.
Showing this on the show was a great idea!
After watching this show weekly and all the love you give to the dogs and people that need help, then I come across a shelter that does this ; http://www.pet-abuse.com/case/19196AL/US/
I get so angry at people who call them a shelter and leave animals to die. Please review the site I listed. It just makes me sick. If there is anyone in the area that you know of, can you reach out to help these animals?
Thank you Tia…you are the most amazing woman and someday I would be honored if I could meet you and visit the animals at your ranch.
Sincerely
Barbara
I lost everything in Hurricane Francis. But that is nothing.
I was watching , and you all remind me of my twin sis and I. But you are all doing exactly what I would rather be doing 24-7. Its all I think about, I carry the pain of these abandoned/abused animals in my heart and in soul every minute. I will continue to tell everyone about you guys, and have them send more donations.
All of you are my heroes.
I haven’t seen the episode yet…but just from seeing the pictures here & the testimonials & above all, Red’s memorials of those beautiful souls that were lost in the storm…I feel compelled to send a donation & to continue to pray for blessings from God on you all during this most-difficult time. love and positive vibes going up NOW !!!
I’m very saddened by the loss that Red and her family went through at the K9 Camp because of the tornado. I watched Sat episode of Pit Bulls and Parolees and I cried my eyes out so much at the memorial. The other dogs whining and whimpering after while Red was reading the names of the lost puppies. This was such a heartfelt and emotional tribute to such loved family members.
I cried when I watched the show. It brought back memories of holding my border collie max in front of our christmas tree in 2008 as he passed away in my arms. Losing a loved pet who are your children really hurts but thru all the pain they are always there with you in your heart and spirit. Red and tia y’all are my heroes keep up the hard work
What r some things that u need donated? And what about shipping? Is ups ok? Or how do we go about it? Prayers r with u guys! <3
I would like to come help for a week or so but I live in NY and I’m terrified of planes
I would like to do a fundraiser to benefit K9 Camp & Villalobos, I’ll send an email to you both after work
I think you all are amazing people. Watching the show every week gives me hope. Thank you all for what you do for the doggies! God Bless.
I will be donating what I can. I had alot of loss last year and my heart hurts for you all. Red, I know your heart hurts now for your babies and your family. Your strength tells me what an incrediable woman you are. Your loss is Heaven’s gain. My mother, father and my 39 year old sister are in Heaven and they were all animal lovers and would be overjoyed to be in the same heaven with your babies.
Omg. Just watched this episode and wanted to tell you how amazing you all are. Thank you
I have 3 boxers and have been an animal lover my whole life. My heart goes out to red and my prayers are with her. If i lived closer i would be there everyday to help, i feel so horrible and wish there was something i could do. Even though we do not have much and live on a shoestring budget, i will definately send some kind of money when i can , i know anything helps. I will also spread the word far and wide to help in any way possible. My wife and i consider people like red and Tia ,family. May God be with you Red, and all your babies are in heaven in a better place. Thank God for people like you, keep it up!
so sorry for the loss of the dogs just started watchin the series in the uk hope u get your kennels up and running soon
I saw the show and was moved to tears when they were finishing up their memorial service for the dogs that were lost and all the other dogs there started howling. Gave me chills as it did everyone standing there. The surviving dogs were grieving right along with the wonderful people caring for them. I wish I could be there to help, but if healing energy can get from Alaska to Alabama, I hope you’re feeling a little bit of it by now. Big hugs from 2 Great Danes, 13 adopted kitties and their “mom” and “dad” ~ you’re in our thoughts and prayers.

I saw the episode and it was very sad to know that she not only lost all of those rescue dog but her own dog as well. I have been looking for a site that I can donate something but as yet I haven’t been able to find one.
I watched the episode last week and have not stopped thinking about it. My prayers are with all of you. I would also like to know if you guys have a wish list of things that you need donated?
I put in for myself and a friend the other day, then today I made another donation.Today I was able to add more to the pot, enough that if everyone were adding $2 to the pot I took care of 5 more people, but in this case I think it will be in memory of a few of my pets who wait on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.

I WATCH THE SHOW SO SAD IT WILL GET BETTER FOR YOU THOSE DOGS WERE LOVED YOU CARED ABOUT THEM MAY THEY ALL RIP GOD BLESS YOU RED
I watched the show and I am so sorry for your loss. If everyone in the world had only a percentage of what Red and Tia have in their heart, the world would be a wonderful place to live. God bless both of you for being a voice to these beautiful creatures who need one.
I just started to cry when I heard that no one would help rebuild. I cried because of so many FURBABYS dying and the loss of the wonderful buildings for these FURBABYS. I was in a tornado in GA. My Husband and I lost everything. I tied myself and our pet carrier to a stump of a tree in a gully and just prayed it would be over soon. Our Mobile Home was gone with all our belongings but we had each other and 4 Mini PIns and 1 Cat n 1 Kitten. We had to go to a homeless shelter and had to give up our FURBABIES because they would not allow us to keep them at the homeless shelter. We now are disabled but I can tell you many PRAYERS will be said for you all to get the people to help and rebuild even better than you had.

Thank You so much Lisa Stankus (708)954-7580
I’m watching the episode right now and I’m fighting the tears. My brother and a bunch of my friends live in Tuscaloosa. My brother was on campus when the tornado hit and his boxer was at my brother’s apartment. The first thing I wanted to know was if Gunther was ok. I knew my brother was ok cuz he’s in the Army and he’s a fighter but if Gunther had passed he and I and our family would have been DEVASTATED!!!! I wish I could help….Maybe next time I’m in Ttown I could go by there.
Watching a marathon of the show all day today. Laughter and tears all day. Hats off to these beautiful people who spend their lives doing something so difficult physically and emotionally and love every minute. I honor you and love you. If only more people existed like you, the world would be a better place. I have been wasting my life allowing depression and self pity ruin my life. I hope I can finally be worth something and do something worthwhile like you. You are an inspiration. God bless you. I wish I could help. Love to u all.
If you would mail me back –to let me know if I can come down and help .I can build anything and repair anything and love dogs like no . I can stay for one week –I have done some side work to come up with the exter $ for the trip . You say go and I’ll be there to help. Thanks and god bless .

That is so awful, and sad. They lost so many dogs, and just seeing them have to go through that makes me tear up…

I really wish i could afford to go down there, id be there in a min. I have a soft spot for pit bulls, being as i have a half pit half lab mix he is my world. I couldn’t imagine being in that situation.
I survived through these tornadoes. As a matter of fact, the day after these hit, I moved to MIchigan. I drove through Birmingham and towards Huntsville and it was total pitch black. Really eery to see the twisted shapes that had once been trees. I saw so many animals on the road that I wanted to pickup so badly, but we just didnt have the room. I cried during this episode since it hit so close to home. So glad that Tia and Tania were able to help this amazing rescue recover.

Hey, I am a big fan of your show. I am planning on openning my own Pitbull Rescue. I was moved by what you guys have done. I am always looking at Pitbulls in shelters and I defend them with people who think they are only for fighting. I am making a video to stop this cruelty. Thank you for everything you do. You are my role models. Thanks again. Courtney, Kentucky
It is now June 26,2012 and I have just watched the Pitbulls& parolees tv show on Animal Planet in Canada. The show was taped by me the other day and I just finished watching 30 min ago and am still sort of crying. I am amazed at the resilience of the brave people who lived through those horrific tornadoes. Tia you are an amazing woman and have taught your childrens well. Red I am so sorry for what happened to you and your facility and the loss of your doggie kids and charge . I hope things are getting better for you all by now. Thankfully there are beautiful people like Tia her staff and Red and her staff in this world. Keep up the good work
Reruns of your show are a Godsend. I DVRed the episode about the kennel’s tornado and killed a box of Kleenex by the time it was over. It’s so heart breaking to hear almost half her dogs died the way they did. Tia kept talking about the wild fire episode and how she and the crew stayed with their dogs. On April 14, 2012 we had an F4 mile wide twister at 10:40pm that came too close for comfort by my house. I understand where these two fiery redheads come from. Give you a new perspective of how short life can be and raises the appreciation bar to a whole new demension. My heart goes out to the K9 camp and hope they are getting all the prayers, donations, and help they need. To Tia and the crew, I have nothing more to say other y’all are angels. God bless you and Villalobos and every animal rescue shelter out there fighting for the lives of creatures that can’t speak for themselves.
